Mark Gallerneault, PEng, PhD, MSc, BSc (Hons)

Director of Technology


ALCERECO Founding Partner Dr. Mark Gallerneault is a distinguished scientist, engineer, named inventor, patent holder, lecturer, and an internationally recognized authority on metals solidification, materials processing, metal matrix composites, and the mathematical modelling of heat and fluid flow in metal systems. A NATO Science Fellowship at Oxford University and Post Doctoral Fellowship at Queen’s University are among Dr. Gallerneault’s numerous academic awards. Credited with some 75 external publications, he holds or shares 10 U.S. patents and many more international patents, and more than 50 invention records related to his 30-plus years of experience in the light metals industry. Currently an adjunct researcher in the Department of Materials and Metallurgy at Queen’s University, Dr. Gallerneault has also lectured at numerous universities worldwide on topics such as computational modelling, solidification, the physical metallurgy of aluminum, recycling, automotive materials, and strip casting. Prior to Grafoid’s acquisition of ALCERECO in October 2014, Dr. Gallerneault held various senior management and technical positions with Novelis, a spinoff of aluminum producer Alcan, and now a world leader in rolled aluminum products. His appointments included those of Technical & Site Director for Novelis’s Research and Technology Centre in Kingston, Ontario, with responsibility for Novelis’s global R&D operations and programs with sister R&D sites in Korea, India, Switzerland, Germany, Canada and the United States. As a senior scientist with Alcan, Dr. Gallerneault oversaw Alcan’s R&D transition to Novelis and served in a variety of scientific and engineering capacities with Alcan between 1980 and 2004, including, ultimately, the assumption of leadership of the Kingston R&D Centre, as well as active engagement in research programs with Alcan's laboratories in Banbury (United Kingdom), Jonquière (Quebec) and Neuhausen (Switzerland). Among his other related metallurgical interests, Dr. Gallerneault is a member of the executive committee of the world’s largest technical aluminum conference – The International Conference on Aluminum Alloys; a project reviewer for NSERC (Canada), NRC (Canada) & EPSRC (U.K.), and a reviewer for a number of technical publications and professional organizations (TMS, Aluminum Association, ASTM and ASM). A former president of the Kingston, Ontario, Chapter of the American Society for Metals, Dr. Gallerneault has been active at the community level as a judge and organizer for local primary/secondary school science fairs, serving to encourage technical development within the youth of the community, and as a judge in the Engineering Section at the national level.

Dr. Florina Truica-Marasescu, Jr. Eng., M.Sc.

Senior Scientist, Surface Science Group


Dr. Florina Truica-Marasescu is ALCERECO’s Senior Scientist and Technical Project Leader. With 17 years experience in academic research and R&D in the fields of surface science/chemistry, surface and interface engineering, nanotechnologies, material and analytical sciences, and plasma and radiation-assisted physico-chemical processes, she is also a junior member of Quebec’s Order of Engineers. After graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Physics from University of Bucharest, Dr. Truica-Marasescu earned her M.Sc. degree in Material Surface Sciences at École Nationale Supérieure des Arts et Industries de Strasbourg. And upon her award of the prestigious “Bourse d’excellence” (Excellence Scholarship) by the Government of Quebec, she earned her Ph.D. at l’École Polytechnique de Montréal. Dr. Truica-Marasescu is the author or co-author of more than 17 papers published in peer-reviewed journals; another 22 published papers in conference proceedings; and, is the recipient of several best contributions/presentations awards at various international conferences. A Technical Reviewer for several international journals (Plasma Processes and Polymers, Plasma Chemistry and Plasma Processing, Macromolecular Chemistry and Physics, and Thin Solid Films) she is a Freelance Technical Editor for Plasma Processes and Polymers journal (WILEY-VCH, Germany). Prior to joining ALCERECO, Dr. Truica-Marasescu was an R&D Scientist and Project Leader at Novelis’ Global Technology Centre in Kingston, Ontario, focused on R&D projects centred on developing new and radical, or improving existing products and manufacturing processes. Her life-long passion is the development of environmentally friendly, cost-effective and easy-to-implement processing technologies for the surface and interface engineering of conventional materials using unconventional vapour-phase chemistry.

Andrew Howells, MSc (Distinction), BSc (Hons)

Manager, Business Development


ALCERECO’s Business Development Manager, Andrew Howells, brings more than 25 years of technical experience in aluminum R&D specializing in product innovation and development, and manufacturing process optimization. A named inventor and multiple patent holder, Mr. Howells earned his BSc in Applied Chemistry at Leicester Polytechnic, and his MSc in Advanced Materials Technology at Surrey University. Until his appointment to ALCERECO, he provided technical consulting services to suppliers, manufacturers and buyers of custom-rolled aluminum products. The bulk of Mr. Howells’ career, however, was spent with Alcan and its spinout rolled products company, Novelis, in the U.K., Switzerland, Luxembourg and Canada. His expertise covers a diverse range of aluminum rolled products, including project leadership for the development of fit-for-purpose products from DC, Belt-cast and TRC stock. While Mr. Howells is intimately familiar with technologies covering the whole spectrum of aluminum rolled products, he holds particular expertise in the fields of heat exchanger materials, foil and light gauge products, for which he is a named inventor on 10 U.S. patents. Mr. Howells’ in-demand knowledge of aluminum rolling operations and extensive plant experience has led to regular and extended consulting assignments to more than 20 facilities throughout Europe and North America. His wide-ranging experience, direct customer interactions and a proven ability to resolve technical issues with practical solutions have earned Mr. Howells an international reputation as a sought-after industry expert.
